Carrel, Armand
(1800-1836)
   journalist, political figure
   Born in Rouen, Armand Carrel, shortly after graduating from the military academy of saint-Cyr, took a strong stand against the regime of the Restoration. During France's Spanish campaign (1823), he arrived in Barcelona and joined the forces fighting against King Ferdinand VII and the troops of louis XV III. Arrested and tried, then sentenced to death, he was eventually acquitted. A collaborator for some time with the historian Augustin Thierry, he was a political pamphlet against the Restoration regime. The founder of a liberal constitutional opposition newspaper, Le National (1830), with auguste mignet and louis adolphe thiers, from whom he later politically separated, Carrel joined the republican opposition at the time of the July Monarchy (1830). Following a public dispute that was being carried on in his newspaper, he was killed in a duel with émile de girardin.
